I very rarely am up early enough to see the dawn, let alone photograph it. A few years ago we decided to take our boat from Windsor to Rochester in the Medway at the mouth of the Thames.
The river Thames is tidal until Teddington, and at low tide there is sometimes not enough water to navigate some of the stretches between Teddington and Putney. We needed to be at Teddington in time for the first lock in order to make it to the deeper parts of the river before low tide, so I was up at an unfamiliar time, floating along a very tranquil Thames as the dawn was breaking, and managed to capture this lovely photograph.

Nice write-up and photo. I always love a story behind the photo.

Thank you. I can only think of two or three photos of mine of the sunrise, and they all have a story behind them, otherwise I would have been sound asleep in my beloved bed :). I used to come home at dawn sometimes, I remember how noisy the birds are at that time of day, but I don’t have the stamina to stay up that late any more!!

My sky faces sunset and I am seldom out and about these days to see the sun rise. With the darker mornings now, I must make the effort…. but like you, I find the bed to be way to comfortable to move.

Yes, it’s much easier to be out & about with a camera at sunset than sunrise!! If i’m up at sunrise there is always a reason!

That’s a lovely shot. My Thames is in Oxfordshire and only five fields away from the cottage so an easy walk. For sure, when I’m in England, that’s the place I go to for renewal of spirit. Nicely done.

We live in Weybridge very near the Thames, it is so lovely. Every time we walk there we see something new. I have always lived near the Thames in London, Earls Court, Wimbledon, Molesey and now Weybridge… I expect I will retire in Lechlade if I keep moving towards the source!!

Like you, and despite my name (Dawn), I’m not a morning person, so I can relate. I recently caught an awesome sunrise over Dublin. http://mdmusingsie.wordpress.com/2012/10/10/amamzing-sunrise/

I don’t know how to do that. Help?

Ok, first you have to upload the photo to your media library, then click ‘edit’ and find the file URL from the right hand side of the page. Right click the URL, select all & copy. (PS if you are on a mac I have no idea how to translate!!)
Then, make a comment and immediately click edit…. For the purposes of practicing go back to a previous comment in this thread & edit it to save time. When you edit an existing comment you get a tab above the comment with a few different options including bold, italic and link. Img stands for image, click on the img and a little box comes up saying ‘Enter the URL of the image’ Assuming you haven’t pasted anywhere if you right click on the little box that comes up and then click paste and then ok, all should work.
Don’t forget to update at the end
Let me know when you’ve had a go 🙂
