Normally in the UK whatever the weather, it nearly always causes problems with rail transport. In summer when it gets too hot the points stick, in autumn heavy rain floods the line. Later in autumn leaves cause problems, and then as November arrives ice and snow cause untold delays.
A few years ago the rail networks invested in brand new snow ploughs in order to ensure a problem free winter, however when the first snow arrived the lines were paralysed as ever.
The reason given at the time was ‘It was the wrong type of snow‘
Whenever the weather stops trains now, passengers can be heard to quip ‘Oh it must be the wrong type of rain, or sun, or leaves, or ice, or cold’
Recently standing at Walton on Thames Train station on an icy cold November day, I got the best surprise ever:

I know! Although to be honest, there are quite a few different types of snow, so they were probably correct in what they said, however it was just another in a long line of excuses as to why our trains were delayed and cancelled and people got fed up. I was surprised how long ago that incident was, ‘the wrong type of…. ‘ is always heard still by passengers very few of whom would remember the original incident.
