When I decided that I would be able to go to Dublin for my Dad’s 70th Birthday I only wanted to do one other thing while I was there. My friend Gillian from primary school is a Creative Designer and she was asked by Lily O’Brien’s chocolatiers to design their egg for the Big Egg Hunt.

100 giant eggs were decorated by artists and celebrities, and then placed in different locations all over Dublin. An ‘I Spy’ Egg hunt was launched to encourage people to find the eggs, and an online auction is being held to raise money for ‘The Jack and Jill Children’s Foundation‘ which helps families of children with brain damage to look after them at home.
Gillian’s egg was a special one being designed for the sponsors of the Egg Hunt, and so I really wanted to see it for myself, but then being in the vicinity I realised a few others might be nearby.
When we went out for a meal with my dad on his birthday we found four, and then my dad caught the egg hunting bug (we are very similar)

Dad & I made plans to go into central Dublin to visit Gillian’s Egg, and have some time together. We woke up to snowy conditions, and flight cancellations which was not great news as I was flying home that evening. We wrapped up warmly (I put on almost all my clothes) and headed out into Dublin. It’s a lot quicker to get into the city centre nowadays with the Luas (a revived tramline that was closed in the 60’s) than it was when I lived there, having to stand at the bus stop for over an hour and then at least another 40 minute bus ride into town.
We found Gillian’s Egg, took a quick photo & then decided that breakfast might be a good idea as the snow was beginning to drift! After a delicious warm breakfast in the Kilkenny Design Centre the sun came out & we decided to brave the weather. It was hard to believe it had been so bitter earlier!
We found eggs in Trinity College, The Powerscourt Townhouse, The Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre and in St Stephen’s Green. Had we brought the egg finders map we might have discovered a few more, but we had an absolute ball running around Dublin in between the blizzards looking for giant eggs.

Oh dear! Now I know there is a London one too I’m going to be hooked into doing the London Egg Hunt! It’s a brilliant idea 🙂 I also completely love the Post Box one! If I had seen that I could have put it in my collection of photos of post boxes!

I remember in primary school, probably in first class, we had to do an illustrated book, and you must have been sitting beside me. You did an amazing picture of a Hot Air Balloon and I looked at it & wished I could draw like that! I’m so glad you got to work at what you love best.
I have only just discovered that there is a Big Egg Hunt over here too, so once it gets warmer I will be heading into Central London with my camera.
I can’t afford to buy any eggs, but if I can help spread the word, then that’s help too 🙂

They are all so clever and artistic. For sheer poignancy I’d go with the one with the baby’s head, but my favorite is the lady bug. All the faces are great, it would be hard to choose from them.

I’ve been sorting through the photos since I came back from Dublin, It’s taken me ages to narrow it down to just 72 photos! And now I’ve discovered there’s a London Great Egg Hunt too….

I love the Ladybird one (The Ladies) , It took me ages to find it, but I had seen it online and was quite determined to find it. That one Egg is probably why we ended up finding so many! The Baby one (‘Preserve the Egg’) was lovely, if not a bit strange up close. Some of the eggs were kept in perspex cases to stop them getting damaged and this was one of them, so it wasn’t so easy to photograph.
One that I really loved was ‘The Celestial Waltz’ It probably appealed to the physicist in me 🙂 Some of them looked really great where they were placed, for example ‘The Colour Carousel’ and ‘King Cabbage’ really shone where they had been placed, and the one covered in wood, ‘Recession Aesthetics’ was also perfect for where it had been placed.
‘Bono’ was great to see, as was the ‘Viking’, and the egg ‘Psyche & Cupid’ came out better in photograph than it seemed at the time (although this might just have been cos we were getting cold, another blizzard was starting)! Another favourite of mine was ‘Aspirations’ probably because I like the colour scheme (Have I liked all of them yet??)
The egg ‘Treeborn’ looked wonderful ‘live’ and ‘The Kiss’ was beautiful, but somehow I only managed to photograph one side of it properly. Finally because I adore poppies, I love ‘All things Bright and Beautiful’. My mum liked the same one, but for the flower faeries inside the flowers which i probably wouldn’t have noticed on first glance

I only discovered the egg hunt, on my last morning in Dublin when I met your mum & dad for coffee, That was where I saw the great big chocolate egg I wished I had more time.

Dad sent me a photo of it & I instantly thought how cool it would be to be inside it – having to eat yourself out!!

That looks like so much fun! I would love to make one. My faves were: King Cabbage, Celestial Waltz, Treeborn, For the Love of Chocolate, All Things Bright & Beautiful, The Ladies, Color Carousel, The Kiss, and A Beautiful Day. I’m glad you took a close-up of your friend’s egg – I might not have chosen it if I hadn’t seen all the intricate designs on it – gorgeous!

PS London one was last year they were hidden around London but I went to see them when all in one location. Not sure they doing one this year! (Did not want you looking for what is not there!)
