This weeks Weekly Photo Challenge is Pattern, and for me the hardest thing was choosing just one photo, I love patterns, and I am always photographing them 🙂
I particularly love photographing patterns in nature, which is why I have chosen this picture of a beautiful patterned thistle.
Thistle Flower
This is a photo of a Thistle I took in France quite a few years ago. It is one of my favourite photos, capturing the beauty in simplicity that surrounds us in nature. What I love about WordPress Weekly Photo Challenges is that I get to share photos that otherwise would be forever hidden in my ‘Favourite photographs’ folder

I was just thinking of finding patterns in nature. You beat me to the punch! great pic! I completely agree with you about these challenges: it allows those pictures buried in our digital archives to see the light of day again!

Beautiful flower. Once again you’ve forced me onto the pages of wikipedia and google. Fascinating story of how the thistle came to be the emblem of Scotland.

I don’t know that either, now I have to go google it. Amazing how many things we just accept without question. I am a foreigner here & therefore question more, but still, it never occurred to me to check why they picked such an unfriendly flower!

How the thistle got Scotland
According to a legend, an invading Norse army was attempting to sneak up at night upon a Scottish army’s encampment. During this operation one barefoot Norseman had the misfortune to step upon a thistle, causing him to cry out in pain, thus alerting Scots to the presence of the Norse invaders. Some sources suggest the specific occasion was the Battle of Largs, which marked the beginning of the departure of King Haakon IV (Haakon the Elder) of Norway who, having control of the Northern Isles and Hebrides, had harried the coast of the Kingdom of Scotland for some years.
