Whenever the sun comes out in Dublin in the summer, and people start taking lunch breaks in the park, this song comes into every Dubliner’s head who was around in the 80’s
In the olden days, as my children say, the Liffey really did stink on a hot day! You had to take a deep breath in preparation for crossing O’Connell bridge, and try and not inhale again until you reached the other side! Â It was noxious!
The Liffey has been cleaned up since then, and it no longer stinks, but those of us who remember the smell, always hear this tune when a hot day arrives in Dublin
This post was not supposed to be a nostalgic trip down memory lane, but when I picked the title I got sidetracked!
When I was a child I living in Dublin I would not really have enjoyed a trip to the botanical Gardens in Glasnevin. Flowers weren’t my ‘thing’ and I would have much preferred a long walk up the Wicklow mountains rather than a tedious stroll around the gardens just looking at flowers ‘yawn’!
Either the Botanical Gardens have much improved since the 80’s, or I have changed… I suspect the latter, because when my Dad brought me to Glasnevin on the way to the airport on my last visit I was enthralled!
It was one of those perfect summer days, warm but with a fresh breeze so you don’t get too hot. Â Warm enough to fall asleep on the grass, but cool enough to enjoy a whistlestop tour of the gardens before heading to the airport to catch my flight.
I walked into the gardens and got stuck! The first flower bed took my breath away! After about 10 minutes of me taking photos my dad urged me to move on from the first flower bed! “There’s loads more to see” he said!

Great pictures all, Barbara, but the Blue Heron shots really captured my eye. Next to Eagles, I think this is the most impressive bird for it’s shear force of presence.

Herons are amazing to watch, I could have photographed this one for ages too, he was quite happy with me watching him. I love watching them hunt, they are so stealthy! (Except when they are hunting in our pond!!)

I can still remember the rotten egg stink of the Liffey. Yeuk! Great photos, must try to go there during the week. I head south tomorrow.

I was distracted, so the post was only reblogged this morning. It seemed to go live straight away and would need to be edited to schedule it at another time.
Dublin is glorious this week, and I am having a ball. I danced along Grafton Street, with music gently echoing off the buildings, drank coffee in a cafe open to the street, and then strolled through Stephen’s green. As for yesterday…. you will have to wait until I actually stop and have time to gather my thoughts and sort the mountain of photos!
Today, I have to be ready early with my camera… a mystery lies ahead!

Thank you! I have saved them all as a screensaver on my computer and I am really impressed with them too. I think I may be learning how my camera works better now & it loves a sunny day! Sun is shining lots here at the moment (At long long last) so hopefully some more soon 🙂

What a beautiful place. I would put a place like that high on my list of places I want to be at sunrise!

I’m not sure what the rules of entry are, but im sure you could scale the fence! it is beautifully laid out and always has new displays and sculptures. There was an amazing sculpture there celebrating the discovery of RNA, but it was too big and positioned so I couldn’t get a good angle to photograph it. Next time I need a tall stepladder or some scaffolding! (that would probably get noticed as climbing over the fence at dawn!)

When I lived in Dublin, (which is quite a long time ago I admit) the police were much more likely to give you a rap on the knuckles rather than arrest you for doing something like that… Especially if they could see that there was no intent (or actual) damage to anything. Things might be different now though!
I must ask my sister, she is a member of the Garda Síochána (police) in Dublin
