When we arrived in Perth, I think we expected to see Kangaroos all over the place, wandering around the land beside the airport… in empty spaces, in parks. We were very disappointed not to find any at all 😦
Our friends told us that they see them from time to time, just wandering around, a bit like the way we find deer and rabbits in this country… apparently they are everywhere…. but we couldn’t see any.
When we got to Melbourne we were sure we would see some, my relatives live in the suburbs, but despite a few walks and drives around we didn’t see one
It began to dawn on us that Kangaroos might be one massive Australian myth, Like Koalas, invented to sell a lot of furry toys & keep the tourists coming!
As we started out on our road trip to Sydney we kept seeing road signs warning us of Kangaroos, a bit like the ones in the UK warning of Cattle, or Frogs, so I kept my eyes peeled on the rolling countryside. By the end of our first day travelling we hadn’t seen a single kangaroo, and were beginning to get worried! We had been in Australia 8 days and no Kangaroos seen Anywhere! We were beginning to be convinced that they were the figment of some mad Australian’s imagination.
Tired and dejected we decided to go for dinner in the local golf club in Mallacoota. Driving into the golf club i suddenly glimpsed something out of the corner of my eye! STOP!! I yelled… I had seen a huge field of rabbits…. or a field of HUGE rabbits… No! They were kangaroos! Almost 50 of them… just lolloping about on the golf course in the evening sun just like rabbits would….
We found them!!
Some of them were really huge! 8′ tall at least!
Some had big huge bellies…
With Ears!
And a baby hiding inside 🙂

You’ve given me a great idea for my next golf outing I’m going to rent a Roo from the zoo to be my caddie. My clubs should fit nicely in the pouch…..you know, since they like golf courses anyway.

They do seem just like rabbits in their love of golf courses…. and they could easily beat you to any hole… it’s just making sure you can steer them properly!
Also I expect their droppings are a little bit more of a problem on the golf course than rabbit ones!

I could do with one of them to carry my shopping up hill for me, until of if I am allowed to drive again. They are huge! I would not like to experience a whack from one of their tails. No wonder the cars have Roo-racks on the front! Wonderful photos as always.

We couldn’t believe it when we actually finally found them… they were so massive we kept our distance, especially from the really big one! Their size was really breathtaking! It was wonderful to be that close to such amazing creatures in the wild!

We know that people have that impression that there are kangaroos everywhere, and they are, but not really everywhere. We see them around where we are, but we are in a very bushy area, and if you go for walks in the park at the right time of the day, you will see them. You see them mainly early morning or at twilight when they come out to feed. I’ve never seen a Koala in the wild. I am glad you got to see some while you were, and wild ones.

I guess they are like deer and rabbits over here, everywhere sometimes and hard to spot at others… The evening is the best time for rabbits too. We didn’t get to see koalas this trip, so I guess we’re going to have to come back !

It must have been so surreal to realize that the golf course bunnies were a troop of kangaroos! (Yes, I looked up what a group of kangaroos is called.) I love your panoramic shot of them.
