Out walking this weekend, we came across a flock of llamas. From a distance they look like strange sheep, but not up close!

They look so cute! I can see that they have been shorn, so they must be farmed for wool, but I wonder are they farmed for meat too?

I’ve never seen Llama on any restaurant menu anywhere…. has anyone eaten it? Does it really taste like chicken?

Hi Meg, they are very cute! I’ve been told via Facebook that they are actually Alpacas not Llamas! I’m pretty sure they are not pets as they live on a farm, but hopefully they are just kept for their wool!!

Llamas or Alpacas, doesn’t matter. As I look at your photos Barbara, I can’t imagine them as food on my table.

I stopped eating meat about 13 years ago now… I can’t imagine going back to it! Animals are too cute to eat!

I have never heard of it on a menu in this part of the world, In parts of South America, alpacas & llamas have been used as a source of meat and skins for thousands of years, and it is the main source of protein in their daily diets.

I knew they ate them there, but I’ve never seen them on a menu here or abroad… Maybe they are too tough for our palate?
