Somebody at WordPress really has been trawling through my physics photos, as yet again I find myself able to respond to this weeks Weekly Photo Challenge with photos from Cern!
The challenge announced last Friday is ‘The Sign Says‘
When we went to Cern (in Switzerland to see the ATLAS particle detector in the Large Hadron Collider) we were all in fits of giggles at some of the signs. I just had to capture some of them;
1. A most difficult map
2. All the streets in the complex were named after famous physicists
3. An impossible map…. We are where now?
4. None of us could work out what this one meant
5. Physicists have quirky senses of humour
6. I love this sign for a bike park
7. He did it!
8. Any ideas what this might mean? There were no buttons in sight!
9. The MAD device; instructions
10. No
11. A very clear stop sign
12. This is my favourite…. I wonder if a man turned up with a bucket and a mop would he be allowed in?
Day One 
These signs are very clear to me.
First sign = “No getting lost!”
Second sign = “Be aware of falling apples.”
Third sign = “We said, no getting lost!”
Fourth sign = “No sleeping on the job.”
Fifth sign = “No pointing.” ( That’s just common etiquette)
Sixth sign = “This is what happens when you hitch a ride on the accelerator.”
Seventh sign = “Eye tests to your right.”
Eighth sign = “No skateboarding on accelerator.”
Ninth sign = “If you need this sign to operate elevator, please do not work on accelerator.”
Tenth sign – “No amputations on company property.”
Eleventh sign = “Please wash hands before touching this sign.”
Twelfth sign = “Do not bite cleaning lady!”

I did a search on the top sign. It’s a warning for oxygen depletion, apparently for the risk of nitrogen, argon or helium escaping in the air, lowering the oxygen content. The icon is a person sitting down, with head dropped.

Thanks Mike! I would have never have thought of that in a physics lab, but of course we were 100m below ground so oxygen might run out if we all started exercising! Also they use liquid nitrogen lots in physics, we regularly had low oxygen alarms going off in our low temperature physics department! Even still, we had never seen the sign before!

I’t a trip hazard sign. It’s just mounted wrong. It should be rotated 60° clockwise so that the “hazard” is horizontal on the bottom. see http://vector.me/browse/124584/tripping_hazard_clip_art

Mutated brain cells from moving all that irradiated fuel over the years — actually I just did a google image search. When you go to google images and click on the camera icon in the search box, you can paste the URL of an image or upload an image. Google will then try to match it. That didn’t work for that picture, so I copied the image, eliminated everything but the sign, including removing the fasteners and tried with that, with a bit more success. Even with that it took a while longer, but it was in the wee hours of the morning and I can’t remember what else I did.

Good job with the photos…..I would never have thought to take photos of all those signs…..that is why these challenges are so good.

I just take photos of anything that looks different or catches my eye. It is so great to be able to share these pictures with other people!

I think I might get a little too particular…but with the blog I take more! How is the new job?

The job is good, I’m enjoying it, but they keep wanting me to do more hours… I really shouldn’t until my health improves. At the moment my sinuses are really bad again so i am waiting for an appointment at the end of the month. Also the sun is actually shining in the UK and I want to get out and enjoy it while it lasts!
