Kookaburra sits on the old gum tree,
Merry merry king of the bush is he.
Laugh, Kookaburra, laugh, Kookaburra,
Gay your life must be!
Some local Willie Wagtails obviously were not happy with the Kookaburra sitting there, but despite landing on his back, he stubbornly refused to move! Click on any of the thumbnails to see the full size photos

Did you see any magpies? Are their colours reversed or is that one of Eoin’s tall tails?

Yes we saw some, they are black and white, but the white is on their backs… they don’t have any of the lovely colours ours have, and they’re bigger and more aggressive! More like our seagulls. I’m sure I’ve a photo somewhere, but I’ve only looked through the first 700 or so….so far!

Sounds about right… although we did fly to Melbourne from Perth, so it is next on the list!

That is a fascinating bird. Heard of it but never saw one. The pelicans too. We have several around here but none that look like that. Those are beautiful sunset pictures. Perth to Melbourne? That’s pretty much the whole continent isn’t it?

They’re big & very noisy, but instantly recognisable… Their call really does sound like a laugh (but not a duck laugh). I must have seen one in a book sometime!
The pelicans are Australian Pelicans, there are 8 different types according to Wikipaedia, and the Australian one only lives there.
We flew Perth to Melbourne! we had originally thought of getting the train but it was hugely expensive so we flew instead… It took over 4 hours, the same time it had taken to get to Perth from Singapore!

They’re really great! We have nothing like this in the UK. You have Bell Birds in New Zealand…. they are pretty amazing!

Yes! They are brilliant 🙂 have lots of photos of them as they are very friendly and not at all scared of people…. New Zealand follows Australia in the sequence I’m afraid so in about 5000 photos time I’ll be there!!
( Plus +++ we saw Kiwis!! )
