Travel Theme; Festive – Esher Common

During our walk in Esher woods today we noticed a tree decorated with baubles and tinsel.  Esher common is very popular with dog walkers, and a family had decorated a tree with Christmas decorations in memory of three of their dogs.

Having found one tree, we kept coming across different trees all decorated for different pets, and one lone tree decorated with a single bauble decorated for a cat, and ‘Mum’

I’ve not seen this kind of thing in England before, but then we haven’t had a dog at Christmas for very long.  Last year we did all our winter walks around St Martha’s Hill where we got married.  Probably a good idea as it is a lot less muddy!!

Janathon 1 (Otherwise known as Wilson finds another swamp)

We brought Wilson for a walk in Esher Woods today thinking that it might be a bit less swampy than beside the river.

He still managed to find the muddiest puddle and sit down in it

A very very muddy puddle

A very very muddy puddle – He looks like he knows he is not supposed to sit in it!

Then, when we were nearly back at the car he found a ditch full of stinky water & sat in that too.

A little bit muddy & very happy 🙂

Thankfully we had our Wilson bag with us so he didn’t make too much of a mess in the car, but he had to go straight in the bath when we got home

He now smells wonderful 🙂

River Thames in Flood, Walton-On-Thames, England

The Thames has been flooding for a few more days.  Christmas this year has been more damp than cold.  Our annual outdoor swim in Hampton Pool was interspersed with the occasional downpour, and today we just managed to get back from our walk with Wilson (Yay!! Janathon – 1 Dog Walk) before the heavens opened again

As a result the water in the Thames has risen even higher, so I thought I would try and take some photos of it, this time near Walton where they are building a new bridge (hence the crane in the pictures).  I have some other pictures from here on sunnier days so I must try to find them so I can compare the water heights.  It is not normally on the footpath!

Here are my pictures from Walton this morning taken with my new camera (Panasonic DMC-FZ62)

Travel Theme; Festive – Christmas Tree

I got a wonderful camera for Christmas 🙂  It’s a Panasonic ‘Bridge Camera’ (the bridge is between compact cameras and dSLR’s) the DMC-FZ62.  It is perfect for me as I have only ever used compact cameras up to now, and therefore changing straight to a dSLR would have been a bit silly so I wouldn’t have a clue how to use it properly, but this camera allows manual adjustments, I just have to learn how they work

In the meantime it also has a wonderful range of pre-set functions, some that were on my compact (the Panasonic Lumix DMC -TZ8), and some new ones. I was playing with them yesterday.

I thought this photo was a particularly excellent photo for the festive theme 🙂

From Sofa to Marathon – Week 2

Last week I was quite despondent that I haven’t been able to do any running or circuit training at all due to my neuralgia & now chesty cough too.  I made a resolution to spend some time looking up what is involved in preparing for a marathon & have a look at what I need to do about food.

Most of the training plans that I have found are three month preparations for a marathon based on how long you expect to take, but I have no idea how long it will take me, so I’m going to start with the 5+ hours training plan and go from there.  I don’t see myself in any way ready to run a marathon in 3 months time, but at least if I start I will get fitter!!

On Sunday I found a group on WordPress ‘Janathon‘ for people who want to get fit and are making a commitment to doing some sort of exercise every day, and blogging every day about what we have or haven’t done.

So progress so far:

0 miles, 0 hours training, 1 dog walk 🙂

I have replaced my evening snacking on chocolates and biscuits with bowls of fruit.  The vitamin C can do me no harm considering how poor my immune system seems to be at the moment.

I have joined Janathon

Janathon

I will be including walking Wilson in my training plans, as I do tend to walk fast when I am walking him, and throwing sticks & balls is light exercise too 🙂

I have started a food diary.  What I have gleaned from many of the different sites that I have looked at, is that a good nutritious food intake is key to improving my physical health, so I really need to have a good hard look at my eating patterns and find out what might be missing from my diet.  Being vegetarian, it can be easy to miss out on protein, but I am always very conscientious about this, and we do eat a lot of fish.

My target for next week:

Complete my ford diary every day

Try and at least go for a brisk walk every day, minimum 1 mile.

Blog my progress we very day under the title Janathon

See you next Wednesday – I do love this sofa!!!

If this was my sofa I probably would never get off it!

Christmas comes early for Wilson

Wilson loves water.  We think he has some Water Spaniel in him, although he is definitely not that big! He has webbed feet.  We got him from the RSPCA so we do not have his history apart from that he does not seem to have been mistreated, just he kept getting underfoot and breaking his leg & the family who had him could not afford the vets bills.

Some people say he is a Cocker-Poo, he may indeed have a bit of poodle in him as when his hair is wet it goes curly, but we think he is 99% spaniel, and when properly groomed and his hair long he looks just like an English Show Spaniel.

Not today though.

Today Wilson was a Water Spaniel.  All his Christmasses and birthdays came at once.  He found a swamp 🙂

Travel Theme; Festive

India is an incredibly festive country.  Every evening on the west coast families make their ways to the beach to celebrate the sunset.  The sounds and colours are magical.

I have been to India a few times, always in January and sometimes their Christmas decorations are still on display.  It seems strange to me coming from wet and cold London to find an open air restaurant in 30ºC heat with Christmas decorations

Almost every day is a day of celebration for one of the multitude of religions that are practised in India.  Each one celebrates their special days with an abundance of floral decorations.  We went to Thiruvananthapuram and visited some of the temples.  We were enchanted with the wonderful festive decorations and souvenirs on display.

Note a lovely bike featuring again in this photo 🙂  I didn’t realise how much I like photographing bikes!!

I forgot to ask what these were for. I think they were candles for the temple, but I thought they looked like little Christmas trees!

WordCloud for my blog :)

My very first Wordcloud created using Tagxedo

My very first Wordcloud created using Tagxedo

Thank you to Rarasaur for the idea… I just went to http://www.tagxedo.com/, pasted in the home page of my blog & hit ‘submit’.  I was able to delete silly words like ‘Weekly Photo Challenge’, ‘Postaday’ and ‘Comments’, and this is the result.

The WordCloud you get is interactive but I couldn’t work out how to save that one (to be honest I’m not well at the moment & I like the pretty picture, so I decided to stick with this one) so I just print-screened the result when I was happy with my tweaks & uploaded that.  Maybe when I update this in a few months I’ll go on to teach myself how to complete the WordCloud creation.  In the original if you hover your mouse over the little words (like injured right at the bottom) they grow so you can read them

Update 15/8/2013

Since me doing a marathon is a bit out of the question at the moment, I thought I’d better update my wordcloud, so I followed the links above, had a play, and this is what turned up this time round;

A Stunning photo of a Mallard Duck

I took this photo of this beautiful duck, iridescent in the morning sun as I was having a look at the progress on our new bridge at Walton on Thames

Mallard Duck

As he wandered around the river bank he reminded me of one of my favourite children’s books, ‘Duck is Dirty’ by Satoshi Kitamura (きたむら さとし)

Weekly Photo Challenge; Surprise

Normally in the UK whatever the weather, it nearly always causes problems with rail transport.  In summer when it gets too hot the points stick, in autumn heavy rain floods the line.  Later in autumn leaves cause problems, and then as November arrives ice and snow cause untold delays.

A few years ago the rail networks invested in brand new snow ploughs in order to ensure a problem free winter, however when the first snow arrived the lines were paralysed as ever.

The reason given at the time was ‘It was the wrong type of snow

Whenever the weather stops trains now, passengers can be heard to quip ‘Oh it must be the wrong type of rain, or sun, or leaves, or ice, or cold’

Recently standing at Walton on Thames Train station on an icy cold November day, I got the best surprise ever:

The Right Kind of Snow :)
