I am Delicate; I have neuralgia, also known as prosopalgia, the suicide disease

I am delicate

That is when I am not in complete agony

Neuralgia headache

Neuralgia headache

Initially my doctor thought I had sinusitis, which i am prone to since i have had hay-fever since childhood and a recent MRI scan highlighted that my right sinuses are blocked and will probably need draining soon, however the pain this time was not in my nose, but around my eyes and lower forehead, and as it became more intense it centred itself further into my left eye and my left cheekbone.

The pain was so intense on Thursday night I cried all night, trying to find a painkiller that would simply reduce the pain slightly.  It was dreadful.  I wanted to be taken to hospital and to be given a general anaesthetic to remove the pain.  I could understand people killing themselves over headaches. My hand was over my eye the whole time, I kept putting cold wet flannels on it, I thought it was going to burst the pain was so awful.

First thing on Friday morning we rang the duty doctor to ask for some different painkillers & the doctor also suggested antibiotics just in case, though I don’t have any symptoms of infection (temperature, feeling ill, achiness elsewhere etc).  By the time I got to the doctor to collect the medicines I was crying again and asked the receptionist to ask the doctor increase the dose again.  She told the duty doctor what a state I was in and I got to see my registered GP.  He took one look at me and said “right, lets start again”.

After talking with me for 20 minutes he established that the pain I have is neuralgia caused by a damaged, injured or over-sensitive nerve in the side of my face that is causing my pain.

The medication that I am already taking for my Fibromyalgia treats this type of pain as it acts on the same receptors, pain receptors on the nerve endings, so he has just doubled the dose, and then given me some intense anti-inflammatories as my cheek is swollen from the pain, and if there is pressure on the nerve this will help relieve it.

24 hours later already i feel better.  The new regime of painkillers is a much lower dose so I am not in as much pain, I can now brush my teeth again and drink cold water without wincing.  But i am still very fragile, delicate.  I need a lot of TLC!

These are the instructions I found on one website:

  • Eat soft foods.
  • Make sure your drinks and foods are not too cold or hot when you consume them.
  • Wash you face with lukewarm water (body temperature).
  • Use cotton pads when washing your face.
  • Rinse your mouth with lukewarm water after eating if tooth brushing triggers an attack.
  • Avoid known triggers as much as possible.

I have to wear a balaclava style scarf when I go outdoors, and I can’t wear any of my glasses as the weight of them hurts me, even though I have always had very lightweight frames with plastic lenses made for me, now I can’t wear any.

I am making an appointment with the dentist on Monday just to rule out an abscess which can often cause neuralgia like pain, but based on my history of fibromyalgia, it is much more likely to be a nerve problem.  The only niggling worry is that it might be the start of MS.  There I’ve said it.

Hopefully not.  I don’t think it runs in our family.

So it’s me that’s delicate… like this little flower we found growing between the cracks of lava in Lanzarotte

Travel Theme; Transportation

I love cycling, and I love bicycles.  Here are some I’ve taken  on our travels, not all suitable for transportation!

My very first bike, I bought it for £30. It gave me independence, freedom, and got me all over Dublin from Killiney to Howth, (once on the same day!!). I finally won a bike in a competition that had 5 gears, but my classic gearless bike got me really fit!

Weekly Photo Challenge; Delicate

Having posted for the Weekly Challenge a day early yesterday in utter panic at 7.17pm when it still hadn’t appeared (because it was Thursday!) , today I nearly missed the Weekly Photo Challenge completely!

I am on massive doses of painkillers at the moment for my Neuralgia (previously diagnosed as Sinusitis) and the letters on the keyboard keep dancing in front of my eyes (and fingers) so I do have some excuse.  I’m having one of those lucid half hours in between pain becoming unbearable & having to take painkillers and hence disappearing into a blurry haze, so I thought I’d better post quickly!

Delicate describes perfectly how I am feeling at the moment, but I promise you, you do not want to see a photo of me right now!! 🙂

Instead I’m posting a photograph of a very delicate and lucky Dragon-Fly

Rescued from the Cat

Rescued from the Cat

We rescued this delicate creature from our cat Lilly Plankton, who was playing with her happily in the house. We brought the Dragon-fly into the garden & released her onto our Hydrangea bush, high off the ground and away from Lilly.

Lilly then jumped up onto the wall above the bush and caught the dragon fly again!!

We rescued it again & locked Lilly in the house.

Daily Prompt; Flawed

With the absence of the Weekly Photo Challenge (7.13pm GMT) yet I am quickly suffering from withdrawal symptoms, and hence am having a go instead at the appropriately timed Daily Prompt; Flawed.

The prompt suggested by Michelle W, asks what is your worst quality, in itself a contradiction. If it’s a quality, can it be a ‘worst?’.

In some ways my love of photography is my worst quality. As Mark Twain is incorrectly quoted ‘Golf is a good walk spoiled’, my family and (often Wilson) would say that me bringing my camera ruins a walk as I spend my time taking photos, and therefore according to them this means I am not enjoying the walk… But I am, I am just not participating in the walk in the same way as they are, but I love our walks!!

Having discovered the world of blogging I finally have an audience for my photos. I used to embarrass my children by putting loads of photos of them and me on Facebook, but the theme-driven approach to blogging is enabling me to present my photos old and new to a much more appreciative group!!

Below is a photo of me, taken by a fellow lover of photography during our trip to CERN in Switzerland, my quality of having a camera in my hand a huge amount of the time clearly on show!

Travel Theme; Circles – Royal Holloway University through a Crystal Ball

Some of my best memories from Royal Holloway University were in the summer between exams when we were all able to sit out in the sun in the Quadrants in the centre of the original building. ; On one of these days one of my fellow students had acrylic juggling balls & we all had a play with them.

18 year old boys, being 18 year old boys tried to set fire to the grass. ; Others tried to juggle with it, rolling it from finger tip to finger tip along their shoulders. ; I decided to use it as a lens.

Here are some of my results (now, can I remember how to display a gallery as circles??)

12.12.12 12:12 Is it too early for a New Years Resolution?

I have thought about doing something like this for a really long time, but always the second the thought came into my head it ran for the exits as fast as its little feet could carry it!!

Recently I have started getting fit again at last.  When I say started, I mean…. I did 2 weeks and then injured my Achilles’ tendon which is only just healing (sorry), and now I have a reoccurrence of my sinus infection which incapacitated me for weeks in April.  But the thought won’t go away!  It keeps getting stronger!

So I’ve decided, I’m not going to train for the 2013 one.  That’s a bit too soon considering I’m only managing an average of one day a week so far!

2014 Winchester to Salisbury cross-country marathon here I come!

Now it’s official!  I’ve hit he ‘Publish ‘ button!!

Laughter is the best medicine; Some headache jokes I have found!

Divorce

A few days after finishing His creations, the Lord called to Adam and said, “It is time for you and Eve to begin the process of populating the earth so I want you to kiss her.”

Adam was a bit confused. “Yes Lord, but what is a kiss?” So the Lord gave a brief description to Adam who took Eve by the hand and took her to a nearby bush. A few minutes later, Adam emerged and said, “Thank you Lord. That was enjoyable.”

The Lord replied, “Yes Adam, I thought you might enjoy that and now I’d like you to caress Eve.” And Adam said, “What is a caress?” So the Lord again gave Adam a brief description and Adam went behind the bush with Eve.

A while later, Adam returned, smiling, and said, “Lord, that was even better than the kiss.” And the Lord said, “You’ve done well, Adam. Now I want you to make love to Eve.” And Adam asked, “What is ‘make love’ Lord?”‘ So the Lord again gave Adam directions and Adam went again to Eve behind the bush, but this time he reappeared in two seconds.

Adam said, “Lord, what is a headache?”

A very old one

A husband walks into the bedroom holding two aspirin and a glass of water.

His wife asks, “What’s that for?”

“It’s for your headache.” “I don’t have a headache.”

He replies, “Gotcha!”

Accupuncture

Ned was  suffering from severe headaches.

He went to a doctor who said  “I myself suffered from that same type of headache for many years. This is how I cured it: Every day I would give my wife oral sex. When she came she would squeeze her legs together with all her strength and the pressure would relieve the tension in my head. Try that every day for two weeks and come back and let me know how it goes”.

Two weeks go by and Ned was  back, “Well, how do you feel?” “Doc, I’m a new man! I feel great! I haven’t had a headache since I started this treatment! I can’t thank you enough. And, by the way you have a lovely home.”

Morphine

To be honest I agree 🙂 Especially the way I feel today & if this is the best headache jokes the internet can offer, then it is a sad state of affairs!

Sinus headache, or have I been hit by a scaffold pole in my sleep?

Sometimes words can’t describe things properly.

The pain I have with this headache is like that, so I looked for images.

In this picture from Matt Koening’s Blog, he looks like how I feel:

This photo shows how I feel

This photo shows how I feel

With this headache I can’t frown, it hurts.  I can’t hold anything cold against my head, it hurts.  I want to stop my left eye looking, but to close it or cover it hurts.  Lying down makes it worse.  The only thing that works is lots & lots of heavy duty painkillers…. so having taking my daily recommended dose already today, I am now able to write, but not by hand…. (I can’t focus on where the pen is!)  Just typing because  my fingers know their way round the keyboard themselves pretty much these days.

My train of thought is all over the place, as probably is my spelling.  Spell-checker should catch my spellings…. apologies in advance for my train of thought.  Its either this or feel like I have a brain tumour.

Which I don’t.  Luckily for me I have proof, as the way I have been feeling since last Friday morning if I didn’t have solid affirmative evidence I would have been banging down the doors of A&E (quietly!) to get them to scan my head again.

A picture of my brain. Even I can see there is no tumour there! Not as much grey matter as I would have hoped either. Hey ho

Anyway.  I’m feeling poorly & very sorry for myself.  I can’t drive because either I can’t see the road cos I have one eye closed, or I’m not safe to be let out…. or both.  Maybe I’ll actually get my Christmas cards written today??

Weekly Photo Challenge; Changing Seasons Royal Holloway University of London, Surrey

I have found this challenge quite difficult, because I have wanted to show photos of the same place in different seasons, and apart from my back garden, I have hardly any photos of the same place from the same angles in different seasons.

Then I remembered my university. I studied physics at Royal Holloway University of London in Egham. The original university was a beautiful red brick building that reminds many students of Hogwarts!

Thomas Holloway was a self-made multi-millionaire whose fortune had been made in patent medicines. He founded Royal Holloway College in 1879 after initiating a public debate inviting suggestions as to ‘How best to spend a quarter of a million pounds or more’. It was his wife Jane who suggested a college for women as the means by which Holloway’s money might effect ‘the greatest public good’. (RHUL History)

Thomas & Jane Holloway

I went there for four very happy years, and as a result saw it in all seasons. It was such a photogenic building I took lots of photos, and looking at them with fresh eyes, I have found some from similar angles in very different seasons.  It is such a beautiful building, it lifted my spirits every day I drove through the gates.
