I found the grub from my log-pile
He was most definitely a melolontha-melololontha – or in English; a Cockchafer Beetle Grub, and a BIG one!

Not a stage beetle larva? https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q=cache:2SVJFWs_9gwJ:www.woodland-trust.org.uk/ancient-tree-forum/atfnews/images/stagbeetles.pdf+&hl=en&gl=uk&pid=bl&srcid=ADGEESgGZxYwVGauLIRuP2pAhbom2_LTca1lb_z3YyTa8bD_t3vzUcUOBipzHWGu1ePGOrnuyVtFLRlYu27nk6TI4kxtcFW6-YNzfamNpf5Ec2CeOOX_u-yAA4cwPrtZqid6jDn4ALSn&sig=AHIEtbRFoYd7exZ3mW2RdI4IljCvyYnY_A

Possibly! It was huge though… At least 10cm long…. The Stag Beetle says up to 60mm, but if it was, then that us good 🙂

I made this when I was visiting the V&A museum with the girls at Easter. I was playing about with a comic making programme while waiting for them to come out of a class, and made this. I thought it was a good cover photo as some people really do NOT like seeing large beetle grubs on their computers!! It was even more scary in my hand!! I wish I had taken a photo of it myself, but once I picked it up I just wanted to rehouse him ASAP!
I’m sure he felt the same 🙂

I am with you on your Cockchafer ID. I presume you did check that it had a transverse anal opening, that’s the real clincher. 🙂

Afraid not….. I gently picked it up & moved it to its new home!!! I didn’t feel much like examining it further 😦 too scary! Have looked at a good few photos since though & it definitely looks like a Cockchafer to me, but I’m no expert!!

It’s a biggie! Like something out of the Quatermass Experiment.

Indeed it was! Certainly bigger than an average stag beetle larva, but he/she could have been growing for a few years. Hopefully moving house wasn’t too disruptive!

It’s sort of… beautiful. Don’t you think? I think it’s the perfect little dotting along it’s side… stylish. 🙂

Stylish yes, but a little too large for my liking… and a little too much in MY garden as opposed to somebody else’s garden!

Haha, that’s true! I think I can appreciate it more in a picture than I could in real life. 😀
